STRUCTURE A sculpture for school 1243 Simplistically put, this sculpture represents a variety of elements of structure and, metaphorically, refers to the school experiences of the students at 1243, or, for that matter, any other academic institution. “Structure” is constructed with bronze, copper, brass, and steel, forming three elements; a tree, the steel base, and letters of the Latin and Cyrillic alphabets. Each material or element, in of themselves, is a portion of the whole composition. This means they are dependent on the other facets for both the complete visual image, as well as the intellectual concept. The tree, made of bronze rod and copper, is representative of both organic growth and educational experiences the students attain in school. The geometric form is made of steel, which supports the tree. This is representative of man’s technical manipulation of nature, in hopes of progress to benefit mankind and our natural world.

The combined letters, of the Cyrillic and Latin alphabet, are made of brass and represent the language curriculum at 1243. They are the symbolic fruit of the tree and of the educational process itself.

Additionally, the letters can be used to construct words, the words can be assembled to make sentences, and sentences can be formed into paragraphs for essays, stories, verse etc. Words convey ideas formed from the learning process in school, as well as from life experiences.

So, the features of this sculpture have been assembled to be a ‘visual statement’ and an esthetic structure, as well. They communicate the importance of the learning process, coupled with the expression of acquired knowledge.

As the creator, and one of two parents of students, who attend School 1243, this sculpture is my way of saying "Thank you!" to School 1243 and the Moscow school system. Thank you, for doing so much for our children, Sally and Anna Williams. Holly Nielsen is my supportive wife and loving mother of the girls.

Special thanks to Director Verofkina, for her invitation and enthusiasm to create a sculpture for the school! As she will attest, it began as a very different kind of project. However, like any idea, with a little time and nurturing, it grew more interesting and concluded as a far more fulfilling and rewarding accomplishment than originally expected.

СТРУКТУРА Скульптура для школы 1243 Если говорить упрощенно, эта скульптура представляет собой разнообразие структурных элементов и метафорически выражает ощущения, испытываемые учениками школы 1243, а в связи с этим – и любого другого академического заведения. “Структура” выполнена из бронзы, меди, латуни и стали и состоит из трех элементов: дерева, металлического основания и букв латиницы и кириллицы. Каждый материал или деталь ценны сами по себе и являются частью единой композиции. Это значит, что они взаимозависимы как средство создания и целостного зрительного образа, и интеллектуальной концепции. Дерево, сделанное из бронзового стержня и меди, представляет одновременно процесс органического роста и опыт обучения, который ученики получают в школе.

Геометрическая фигура, являющаяся опорой для дерева, выполнена из стали. Она отражает технические манипуляции, которые человек осуществляет над природой в надежде, что прогресс принесет пользу и человечеству, и природе.

Сочетание букв русского и латинского алфавита, выполненных из латуни, представляет курс обучения языкам в школе 1243. Буквы символизируют плоды дерева и собственно образовательного процесса.

Кроме того, буквы можно использовать для составления слов, слова собираются в предложения, а предложения образуют параграфы сочинений и рассказов, стихи. Слова выражают идеи, появившиеся в результате процесса школьного обучения и жизненного опыта.

Таким образом, элементы этой скульптуры складываются в «визуальное утверждение» и одновременно – в эстетичсекую структуру. Они передают идею важности образовательного процесса в сочетании с выражением приобретенных знаний.

Для меня как для создателя и одного из родителей учениц школы 1243, эта скульптуря является выражением моей благодарности школе 1243 и московской образовательной системе в целом. Спасибо вам за все, что вы делаете для наших детей Салли и Анны Вильямс. Ко мне присоединяется любящая мать девочек и моя верная жена Холли Нильсен.

Хочу выразить особую благодарность директору школы Марина Виктровна Веревкиной за ее энтузиазм и предложение создать скульптуру для школы! Она может подтвердить, что изначально это был совсем другой проект. Однако, как любая идея, через короткое время благодаря творческой подпитке она превратилась в более интересный и приносящий удовлетворение проект, чем ожидалось изначально.
